Botanical Name: Luculia gratissima (Wallich) Sweet
Plant Family: Rubiaceae
Common Name: Pink Swa

GARDEN LOCATION: Luculia gratissima is located below the Residence Garden directly opposite the English Oak trees below the road.

GENERAL NOTES: Luculia gratissima is one of five species of Luculia. All Luculia occur through the Himalayas, Bhutan, Nepal to Yunnan Province in China. Luculia gratissima is regarded as a shrub or small tree that can reach a height of approximately 5 metres. The profusion of terminal pink flowers are highly fragrant and occur during early winter. Luculia generally require protection from hot winds and severe frost.

Other luculias that can be found at Mount Tomah Botanic Garden are Luculia intermedia and a yet unidentified Luculia species from China. Luculia intermedia which is very similar to Luculia gratissima can be seen just starting to flower below the Visitors Centre viewing deck. The Luculia species are planted throughout the Plant Explorers Walk. All of these Luculia have pink fragrant clusters of flowers.
